Experience what it’s like to be in a desert… surrounded by oasises.
Officially the “Reserva Natural Especial de Las Dunas de Maspalomas”, the Dunes of Maspalomas or the Mini-Desert is one of the main landmarks of Gran Canaria Island. It’s impressive, huge and occupies 404-hectare (1,000-acre) .
The Dunes were formed by sand from the now subdued marine shelf, when it was laid dry during the last ice age and the wind blew the sand towards the coast of the island.
The Dunas of Gran Canaria Island were one of the contenders in the 12 Treasures of Spain contest.
Many go sit in them to watch the sunset and the magnificent view. The Sahara desert is accross the ocean.
It surrounds the Gay Men’s Beach so you won’t miss it.
